When I decided to write a column for our church
newsletter about parenting, I wanted to choose a title that was
both appropriate for a church newsletter and relevant to the job
of parenting. I looked up the word pastoral and found that its definition
included references to shepherds and to spiritual care and guidance.
That seemed to fit the bill. If you are a parent and have ever taken
young children out in public, then you can certainly identify with
the shepherding aspect. As for spiritual care and guidance, these
seem to me to be the very essence of parenting. Thus the title of
this column.
Our local newspaper runs John Rosemond, a syndicated
parent advice columnist, every Sunday. I frequently find my parenting
philosophies at odds with John Rosemond's and attempt to provide
an alternative view of parenting through letters to the editor.
These are my responses.
